Niche Productions is proud to announce the return of international purveyors of dub, roots, blues and soul – the one & only HYPERLINK "http://www.bigchill.net/story.html?id=1173" Fat Freddy's Drop. ‘Back by popular demand’, Freddy’s world renowned spectacle is a truly unique live experience.
The Aussie gigs come towards the end of yet another amazing year for the Kiwi hi-tek-dub-soulsters who stormed the Jazz World stage at Glastonbury Festival in June playing the penultimate spot on the last day of the Festival and winning accolades from the gumboot massive.
Other triumphant gigs for The Freddy’s on their recent Fantastic Voyages tour to UK/Europe were two sold out shows at London’s famed Astoria, a memorable slot at Garance Reggae Festival in Paris as well as playing the Dance stage at Glastonbury.
The last live gigs by the Freddy’s in Australia were killa summer shows at Womadelaide, Playground Weekender, and East Coast Blues & Roots Festival while back home in NZ the band’s 2005 B.O.A.T.S album continues to edge up to 8x platinum status.
For those who’ve not yet had the pleasure of the Fat Freddy’s live juggernaut, expect towering layers of soul, slow building grooves, rich and intoxicating vocals, scorching brass, sublime samples, happy vibes and bottom-heavy beats …. not to mention booty-shakin’ aplenty courtesy of trombonist Ho Pepa!
As regular worshipers at the altar of FFD will know, no two shows are ever the same and this is an intrinsic part of the magic created between band and audience at every gig. The Aussie shows are likely to offer a few sneak previews of treats in store from Freddy’s new album due for release in 2008.
Added to this special showcase is recent signing on the Tru Thoughts label (UK) soul sensation Belleruche. Like Sarah Vaughan, Charlie Christian and Cut Chemist stuck in a dusty second hand record store with wine and a sampler, Belleruche make turntable soul music. Vocalist Kathrin deBoer, guitarist Ricky Fabulous & Dj Modest met in a London street market whilst running from the law, banks and parents. Whilst holed up in a modest flat, Fabulous noticed Kathrin singing whilst making tea. They formed a plan and Belleruche was born out of a love of old vinyl, true funk and real soul music.
From the underground to the higher-ground, catch the seven-headed South Pacific soul monster supported by Belleruche (UK) at the following venues:
Fri 2nd Nov: Melbourne Metro
Sat 3rd Nov: Sydney Enmore Theatre
Sun 4th Nov: Brisbane Tivoli
