Tribe - Rebirth

I have to feign most of my knowledge of Carl Craig and Tribe. I became most familiar with Craig through the acts he discovered and remixed and am always impressed by the sounds he pulls, if not a little baffled by how long some of his songs take to reach their point. Sure, it’s a dizzying view when you get there but as a younger man, I always just wanted him to cut to the frickin’ chase! It’s funny, because in Jazz music, you can mess around to your heart’s content and then return to the main theme minutes later to rapturous applause, so the marriage of these two Detroit music legends is a bloody good fit. The new album Rebirth features almost entirely the original lineup of the Tribe crew, some of which, like Phil Ranelin and Doug Hammond are still actively recording and performing live. Subtle clicks and the odd booming kick, echo effect or synth line are gently interwoven amongst the live Jazz on the album which is about as deep as it gets. It’s almost cerebral at times, brazen at others. Also featured on the album are contemporary Detroit musicians like Amp Fiddler, Karriem Riggins, John Arnold and many more which may help bridge the gap for those who don’t think they like Jazz. Make no mistake, nothing is compromised on the LP, it’s certainly not fluffy but does contain new versions of Tribe’s biggest hits, so there is always an air of familiarity.
